What to pack for a Knuckles trek

Worn on the day

Use broken-in trail shoes or boots with a firm sole. Sneakers with no tread slide on the Kotaganga rock. Long trousers beat shorts once you are in leech country. A sun shirt is enough while you climb, with a light fleece in the pack for the gap and for Mini World's End.

Leech socks, worn over your trousers and inside the shoe, are the single most useful extra. We carry a few pairs on forest days. Repellent on the socks helps. Salt or a dab of repellent makes a leech let go. Do not pull the body off and leave the mouthparts.

In the pack

Bring a 20 to 30 litre pack, two litres of water for a day hike, any personal medicine, a cap, sunscreen, and a small dry bag. Phone batteries fade in cloud and cold, so start the ridge with a full charge. Walking poles help on the Five Peaks descent if your knees complain. We can lend poles when you ask ahead.

Multi-day treks add a sleep sheet if you prefer one, a headlamp, and sandals for the cabana or cave evening. Sleeping bags and mats are included when the tour page says camping gear is included. Check that line before you pack a bulky bag you do not need.

Leave behind

Skip cotton that stays wet, new boots, and drone bags. Plastic bottles bought for the day come back to Kandy with us. The forest has no reliable shop between Thangappuwa and the ridge.

Questions

Are there a lot of leeches?

In wet months, yes, especially in leaf litter and beside streams. In a dry February week you may see few. Dress as if they are there either way.

Is the water in the streams safe to drink?

Treat it or drink what we carry. Clear water is not the same as safe water.
