Ultimate Knuckles Nature and Culture Trek

About this activity

This three-day trek links the Kotaganga waterfalls, the Knuckles Five Peaks, and the village of Heeloya. You walk about 34 kilometres in total, sleep in a cabana near the forest, and eat village meals along the way. Pickup is in Kandy at 6:30 a.m. The starting rate is 160 US dollars. Day three ends with a drop in Kandy around 4 p.m.

The shape of the trip is deliberate. Waterfalls on the first day, the ridge on the second, and people on the third. Heeloya's walk passes streams and small estates and includes the site villagers describe as their old court. None of the three days is a rest day, but none is a race either. A moderate level of fitness is enough if you are happy to be on your feet for several hours.

Note: About 34 km on foot. Pickup in Kandy at 6:30 a.m. Drop-off Kandy, about 4:00 p.m. on day 3.

Itinerary

1. Day 1: Kotaganga

   Drive from Kandy to the Thangappuwa side and walk the waterfall chain, including the gorge known for mist that blows upward. Sleep at the cabana.

2. Day 2: Five Peaks

   Cross the five summits on the ridge and return to the cabana. This is the longest walking day.

3. Day 3: Heeloya

   Walk out toward Heeloya, visit the old court site, eat with a host family, and drive back to Kandy by about 4 p.m.
